What Is a Pét-Nat Wine?

Bubbly, fun and a little wild

Let’s talk about one of the coolest, most carefree sparkling wines out there: pét-nat, short for Pétillant Naturel, which means “naturally sparkling” in French. It’s kind of like Champagne’s quirky, free-spirited cousin — bubbly, fun, and a little wild.

Unlike traditional sparkling wines (which go through a second fermentation with added yeast and sugar), pét-nat is made with minimal intervention. That means no added stuff, no fancy tricks — just grapes doing their thing. The wine is usually unfiltered, so it may look a little hazy and have some sediment at the bottom – that’s totally normal and part of its charm! Unlike Champagne, pét-nat isn’t usually aged or disgorged (no popping out the lees), which means it’s ready to drink young and fresh.
