How to Read a Swiss Wine Label

Swiss wine labels can look mysterious — multiple languages, unfamiliar village names, and grape varieties you don’t see every day. But once you know what to look for, they’re incredibly transparent.
Here’s how to decode them:
Start with the Canton (Region)
Swiss wine is organized first by canton(similar to a state), which tells you climate, altitude and overall style.
- Vaud – Home of elegant Chasselas.
- Valais – Mountain wines, bold whites & structured reds.
- Ticino – Italian-speaking, known for Merlot.
- Graubünden – High-altitude Pinot Noir.

AOC: Switzerland’s Quality Seal
If you see AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), it means:
The wine comes from a protected geographic area. Grape varieties are regulated. Production standards are enforced.
Commune > Canton (Village Matters)
Often, you’ll see a village name listed.
For example, a bottle from Dézaley within Vaud signals steep terraced vineyards overlooking Lake Geneva — typically mineral-driven, structured Chasselas with aging potential.
The smaller the location listed, the more specific the terroir.
Grape Variety (sometimes it’s hiding)
Swiss labels don’t always shout the grape.
Examples:
- Fendant = Chasselas from Valais.
- Heida = Savagnin Blanc (Valais specialty).
- Petite Arvine = Petite Arvine.
- Cornalin = Cornalin.

Language Clues: Switzerland has four national languages — and the label reflects that.
French labels = Vaud & Valais.
German labels = Graubünden & eastern Switzerland.
Italian labels = Ticino.
The language itself tells you where the wine is from.
Producer > Brand: Swiss wine is rarely mass-produced. Most estates are:
- Family-owned.
- Small production.
- Estate-bottled.
If the producer’s name is prominent, you’re likely holding something made in very limited quantities.
Why Understanding the Label Matters: Because Swiss wine is rare in the U.S., knowing how to read the label means:
✓ You can identify terroir instantly.
✓ You understand the grape style before tasting.
✓ You can buy with confidence.
Swiss wine isn’t confusing — it’s precise.
